We try our best as breeders to put out puppies of only the best quality, and improve the breed as well as share it, but unfortunately due to over breeding of certain lines there are now some health factors that are taken into account with this breed. All of our dogs have been health screened and we try our best to put out pups that will not have any genetic health concerns but genetics can be weird and mistakes happen. All dogs genetic health record and examined and taken into account when we are choosing our breedings.
Some of the conditions associated with the breed are:
Heart Disease, specifically Mitral Valve Disease (MVD). This initially presents as a heart murmur often at a young age and will continue to develop until the dog eventually develops heart failure. It will be noted in the puppies health records whether this is a concern for them as it is something our veterinarian check at their first vet check.
Syringomyelia (SM), this disease results in cavities in the spinal cord filling up with fluid near the brain. It is a progressive condition and can cause extreme discomfort and pain. It cannot be cured but the pain can be successfully managed.
Joint problems: Cavaliers are commonly associated with developing hip dysplasia and luxating patella. There are joint supplements that can be given.
Eye Problems: They are prone to eye issues including cataracts, dry eye syndrome(problem with tear ducts) cherry eye, and corneal ulcers.
